Q What quality do you look for in people?

I look for individuals who are able to understand people and how human dynamics affect all outcomes. They need to be open-minded enough to consider other views and the variety of alternatives that may be available; tenacious in their desire to find and implement great solutions, not just any solutions, and behave in a way that is consistent with their stated values. They need to be able to speak their mind and back it up.

Professionally, Darwin Smith (now deceased former CEO of Kimberly-Clark) was the most strategic and intelligent business leader I've ever met, who was combined with the clearest sense of purpose and accountability. He consistently put his shareholders' interests before his own personal preferences throughout his career, earning a 22 per cent compounded return on equity over a 21-year period. Mr. Smith is now broadly recognized as one of the most successful CEO's of all time.
