The bright stuff: celebrate 2007 with a splash of color.The new year is all about flesh starts, and who knows more about them than freelance dancers? We tapped four to model our vibrant 2007 leotard looks (here with suggested retail prices), and share style tips and thoughts about taking off in new directions. Since leaving New York City Ballet, Deanna McBrearty has discovered her entrepreneurial spirit. "You become your own motivator, your own judge in the mirror. It's up to you to self-inspire." Deanna likes to choose leotards that express her mood. After dancing with American Ballet Theatre and San Francisco Ballet, Sonja Kostich decided to take control of her future. "You take your life in your own hands," she says. "The projects I pick, I am completely in love with." Sonja prefers a mix of colorful, comfortable fabrics. Rosalynde LeBlanc, who danced in White Oak Dance Project and Bill T. Jones/Arnie Zane Dance Company, is learning to embrace uncertainty. "I don't worry as much," says Rosalynde. "I've freelanced for four years now. It's worked out." When it comes to color, Rosalynde avoids black. When Dance Theatre of Harlem Dance Theatre of Harlem, the first black classical ballet company. The group was founded in Harlem, New York City, by Arthur Mitchell, then of the New York City Ballet, the first black principal dancer of a classical company of international standing. The company began as a school for 30 students in the summer of 1968. went on hiatus Melissa Morrissey was catapulted into freelancing. "It's been great to work with many different choreographers," says Melissa. She also likes to have a variety of leotards on hand at all times.
