The best list: what the advocate will be watching this fall.

Best sitcom

Ugly Betty (ABC ABC
 in full American Broadcasting Co.

Major U.S. television network. It began when the expanding national radio network NBC split into the separate Red and Blue networks in 1928.
, Thursdays at 8 P.M., premieres September 28) El Diablo Wore Prada? Adapted from a Colombian TV serial (Yo Soy Betty, la Fea), this much-buzzed-about comedy follows an ugly duckling, Betty Suarez (America Ferrera of Real Women Have Curves), who works at a fashion magazine. Featuring Michael Urie as the (sigh) effete ef·fete
adj.
1. Depleted of vitality, force, or effectiveness; exhausted: the final, effete period of the baroque style.

2.
, probably gay fashion guy.

Best documentary series

Hot Does (BBC America, Sundays at 9 P.M.) Two entries in this U.K. documentary series are LGBT-focused. In "My Mums Used to Be Men," a 12-year-old girl is raised by a pair of transsexual trans·sex·u·al
n.
A person who strongly identifies with the opposite gender and who chooses to live as a member of the opposite gender or to become one by surgery.

adj.
1. Of or relating to such a person.

2.
mothers (one of whom is her biological father). And in "My Husband Is Gay," five married couples discuss their separations after the husbands come out as gay. Mind you, conservatives, this is not the sort of gay marriage we advocate.

Best food-related show

Top Chef season 2 (Bravo, October) Our favorite cooking show is back, and this year's contestants include a pair of queers: Carlos Fernandez, a Puerto Rican restaurateur, and Josie Smith-Malay, an Asian-American member of the New York Sharks women's football team. Crazy themed com petitions--like preparing "nasty delights" and meals from gas station mini-mart ingredients--ensure this will be a fun dish.

Best reality competition

The Amazing Race season 10 (CBS (Cell Broadcast Service) See cell broadcast. , Sundays at 8 P.M., premieres September 17 at 8:30 P.M.) Still our favorite even after the dreaded "family" season. This year's LGBT LGBT Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender  contestants include Duke and Lauren Marcoccio--an until recently estranged es·trange
tr.v. es·tranged, es·trang·ing, es·trang·es
1. To make hostile, unsympathetic, or indifferent; alienate.

2. To remove from an accustomed place or set of associations.
father and his lesbian daughter--and Manhattan couple Tom Rock and Terry Cosentino, a college admissions director and a special events director, respectively.

Best mockumentary series

The PA (Fuse, Tuesdays at 10:30 P.M., premieres September 15) Fans of NBC's The Office should dig this mock-reality series, which follows Fuse production assistant Josh Taub. Coincidentally, Fuse's gay, gossipy office manager, Jeff, looks uncannily like The Office's Rainn Wilson. But, you know, gayer.

Best debate show

Real Time With Bill Maher Real Time with Bill Maher is a talk show that airs weekly on HBO, hosted by comedian and political satirist Bill Maher. Much like his previous show, Politically Incorrect on ABC (and before that, on Comedy Central), Real Time  (HBO Hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBO)
A form of oxygen therapy in which the patient breathes oxygen in a pressurized chamber.

Mentioned in: Ozone Therapy
, Fridays at 11 P.M.) Before Jon Stewart, it was Maher who proved that liberals and conservatives can remain sane while in the same room and have a good laugh to boot. We're looking forward to a whole new season of calling the antigay agenda to task.

Best soap opera

Dante's Cove (Here, premieres in September) The sexy gay gothic soap returns for another season of supernatural antics, liberal nudity, and campy evil villains. Several lesbian characters join the cast this season, including Queer as Folk's Thea Gill (as Grace's nemesis), who no doubt finds these situations and settings more plausible than those of her previous series.

Best show featuring hot guys who rock

Jacob & Joshua: Nemesis Rising (Logo, Mondays at 10 P.M., premieres October 16) Montana-born gay twins Jacob and Joshua Miller head to Hollywood with hopes of making it big as pop-rock band Nemesis. Thanks to their differences, you can expect some drama. One's a frisky frisk·y
adj. frisk·i·er, frisk·i·est
Energetic, lively, and playful: a frisky kitten.

frisk
 party boy, the other's a nester nest·er
n.
1. One, such as a bird, that nests.

2. Western U.S. A squatter, homesteader, or farmer who settles in cattle-grazing territory.

Noun 1.
. The show kicks off with their decision to come out to their fundamentalist Jehovah's Witness family. The music? Think Savager Garden.

Best travel show

Moms on the Road: Africa (Travel Channel, Thursdays at 10 P.M., premieres September 28 at 9 P.M.) Eight morns hit the road in South Africa for six weeks of self-discovery--sort of like Jack Kerouac. Wife and stay-at-home mom Amy Wimberger of Fort Collins, Colo., comes out in the process. Yes, there will be tears.
