The Summit is being held under the patronage of Kofi Annan Kofi Atta Annan (born April 8, 1938) is a Ghanaian diplomat who served as the seventh Secretary-General of the United Nations from January 1 1997 to January 1 2007, serving two five-year terms. He was the co-recipient of the Nobel Peace Prize in 2001. , UN Secretary-General, with the International Telecommunication Union International Telecommunication Union (ITU), specialized agency of the United Nations, with headquarters at Geneva. It was created in 1934 as a result of the merging of the International Telegraph Union (est. (ITU) taking the lead role, in cooperation with other interested UN agencies. PrepCom 1 During PrepCom 1 held in Geneva in July 2002, the 'Africa Civil Society Caucus' was formed as part of a wider 'Civil Society Plenary Group.' CSOs actively participated in the process, which revolved around 'Rules of Procedure, Accreditation and Modalities for Participation' 'Contents and Themes' of the WSIS PrepComs and Summit. In general, the formal outcomes of PrepCom 1 were less than what was hoped for by CSOs, although a great deal of work was achieved during the meeting and has continued since then.
