Business Editors/High-Tech Writers

TOKYO--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Jan. 8, 2004

Hitachi-LG Data Storage, Inc. (CEO: Kazuya Hori) has developed the world's first 8x high-speed writable DVD drive, GSA-4082B, which supports all writable DVDs*. The shipment is scheduled to start in February 2004.

GSA-4082B is the successor to the conventional Super Multi drive, GSA-4040B and what's more, is capable of writing DVD-R/+R at 8x and writing DVD-RW/+RW at 4x. Without saying, this drive inherits the ability to write DVD-RAM at 3x, the world's fastest. It also reads and writes CD-R and CD-RW, and reads DVD-ROM and CD-ROM as well, which makes this drive compatible with totally 9 types of discs.

*all writable DVDs:

All writable DVDs standardized by DVD Forum (DVD-RAM/-R/-RW) and DVD+RW Alliance (DVD+R/+RW) as of December 20, 2003

GSA-4082B is a built-in type Super Multi drive that can read/write all types of DVDs and CDs. It writes DVD-R/+R at 8x, DVD-RW/+RW at 4x, and DVD-RAM at 3x, all of which are the world's fastest. Unquestionably, this drive has the most up-to-date functions such as multi-boarder and the quick format used with DVD-R/RW, and the multi-session and the background format used with DVD+R/RW.

By increasing the speed of writing, this drive succeeded in shortening the time used for making DVDs, and in speeding up the data backup. Moreover, by supporting 5 types of writable DVD formats, it is the best choice for users who use DVD recorders that are currently becoming popular.

GSA-4082B was developed in collaboration with related companies, by gathering all of the companies' latest technologies for overall development from key components to the product itself. The key technologies developed in order to realize this product are as follows. In addition, it inherits from its predecessor other technologies for stable writing, such as the LD driver with highly reliable write strategy built-in and buffer under-run prevention function.

Compact and high power optical pick up for 8x write

A high power laser allowing high-speed recording is embedded. Its unique heat radiation structure acquires high speed and stabilization, realizing high performance.

1 chip LSI (DSP) for 8x write

Accomplished speeding up the already high-speed high function LSI (DSP) developed for the conventional products that process all formats (DVD-RAM/R/RW, DVD+R/RW, DVD-ROM, CD-R/RW, CD-ROM).

High-precision LD power learning control for 8x write

By adopting the newly developed high-precision LD power control learning method which applied DVD-RAM's LD power learning method, the quality of recording at 8x is secured.
