The Ursula Franklin Reader is a comprehensive collection of the work of one of Canada's foremost advocates and practitioners of pacifism. It brings together papers, talks, and articles drawn from more than four decades of research and teaching.

The following excerpt was adapted from a talk given at a conference called Beyond the Arms Race, held in Halifax in 1984:
Winning is the least useful thing that can happen in any
conflict.... Conflicts must be transcended in order to be resolved.
Real conflicts are resolved only by transforming them into
non-conflicts, but in order to transcend a conflict, to find ways
of permanent resolution, one must walk around a problem, look at it
from all sides, get everyone's co-operation, and begin to discover
   the roots of the situation.
