The book provides detailed research findings punctuated by the authors' own experiences as well as interviews with practitioners or me intended and unintended effects of testing on our students, teachers and administrators.

One of the strengths of this book is its strong research base that offers great support for a closer look by all educators and the public at the effects of high-stakes testing. Particularly interesting for administrators is the chapter on the impact of testing on teaching practices, which provides a good overview of how teaching methods have changed because of high-stakes testing.

While the research points to a mix of outcomes, the discussion of the major factors influencing changes in teaching is important for administrators to review. The authors analyze the major types of assessment (portfolios, essays, writing rubrics), types of professional development teachers receive, subject areas being tested and the level of school achievement.
