The Truth Will Set You Free (Concordia, $9.99), the brief autobiography of Samuel L. Hoard, the second black pastor to graduate from the Lutheran Church--Missouri Synod seminary in St. Louis, tells the story of his struggle against racism in academy, church, and society. Educated through high school in segregated, academically poor schools in St. Louis, he struggled with languages but conquered them. He served as a parish pastor and a military chaplain. While he makes clear that he is committed to the close communion communion in the Lord's supper, restricted to those who have received baptism by immersion.
