The Tokyo Electric Power Develops "Heat Island Effect Inhibition Pavement" Coal Ash Recycling Technology.Tokyo, Japan, Oct 6, 2005 - (JCNN JCNN Japan Corporate News Network ) - Tokyo Electric Power Co. (TEPCO TEPCO Tokyo Electric Power Co. (Japan) ) announced on October 4 that it has developed the Japan's first "Heat Island effect inhibition pavement" technology, which recycles coal ash. It improves the sustainability of cooling effect on roads. Previously the pavements were composed of asphalt and roadbed road·bed n. 1. a. The foundation upon which the ties, rails, and ballast of a railroad are laid. b. A layer of ballast directly under the ties. 2. The foundation and surface of a road. layer, which do not absorb moisture. It has directly caused global warming. The new "Heat Island effect inhibition pavement" employs a double layer system, "coal ash asphalt layer" and "coal ash roadbed layer", both of which are water retentive re·ten·tive adj. 1. Having the quality, power, or capacity of retaining. 2. Having the ability or capacity to retain knowledge or information with ease: a retentive memory. . The technology improves cooling effects by reducing the road surface temperature at 10 degrees Celsius even under the situation that does not have rain for two weeks in a row.
