. Sales for the four week period ended November 1, 1997 were $604 million, up 10% over $548 million achieved during the same four week period ended November 2, 1996. For the 39 weeks ended November 1, 1997, sales reached $5,200 million, an increase of 9% over last year's $4,792 million. Consolidated comparable store sales for the four week period ended November 1, 1997 increased 6% over the same period last year. For the 39 week year-to-date period, consolidated comparable store sales increased 7% over the same period last year.

Bernard Cammarata, President and Chief Executive Officer of The TJX Companies, Inc. stated, "October performance, as well as performance for the third quarter, exceeded our expectations. We are very pleased, particularly since these results were posted over strong gains last year."
