Komen, a beautiful mother of two, died of breast cancer at the age of 36. Before she died, her sister, Nancy Goodman Brinker, made a promise to Susan that somehow she would make it better for other women diagnosed with the disease. In 1982, Nancy G. Brinker fulfilled ful·fill also ful·fil

Today, the Komen Foundation sets new standards for creative collaboration in the fight against breast cancer by developing awareness and fundraising campaigns with a blue-chip network of corporate partners,. national and local media, .as well as health and community organizations.

Since we began in 1982, the Foundation and its Affiliates have raised more than $300 million for breast cancer research, education, screening and treatment. It is credited as the nation's leading catalyst in the fight against breast cancer.

Most people know us from the Komen Race for the Cure [R]. We are proud that

our primary fundraiser, the Komen Race for the Cure [R] Series, has become the largest series of 5K runs/fitness 'walks in the world. Races will be held in more than 100 U.S cities and three foreign countries in 2001 with more than 1.3 million participants expected. Proceeds from the Komen Race for the Cure [R] Series help fund important breast cancer research as well as breast health initiatives on a local level. Seventy-five percent of the proceeds remain in the community where the Race is held, helping to support breast health education and breast cancer screening This article or section recently underwent a major revision or rewrite and needs further review. You can help! X-ray mammography
Mammography is still the modality of choice for screening of early breast cancer, since it is relatively fast, reasonably accurate, and
and treatment programs for the medically underserved. These programs are funded based upon a special needs assessment survey performed by each Affiliate. The other 25 percent of the Race proceeds help fund breast cancer research and project grants awarded through Komen Foundation headquarters.

The Komen San Diego Race for the Cure will be held on Sunday, November 4, 2001 in Balboa Park Balboa Park is the name of several municipal parks, including the following:
  • Balboa Park, San Diego, California, United States
  • Balboa Park, San Francisco, California, United States
  • Balboa Park, Encino, California, United States
  • Anthony C.
. In 2000, the race drew nearly 15,000 participants, and we expect to break that record-setting number this year. This year's race has already attracted a record number of teams participating in the 5K run and the one-mile walk. It is the continued and outstanding .support from the corporate community that enables the Komen Foundation to fund the research, education and outreach necessary to find a cure for breast cancer.

As we recognize the women in San Diego who are truly making a difference in our community, we encourage San Diegans This is a list of famous people or were born, spent a majority of their life, or currently live in San Diego, California, USA.
