The Summons.

John Grisham. 2002. Read by Michael Beck 8 cds. 8.5 hrs. Random House Audio. 0-553-71463-5. $39.95. Cardboard and plastic; plot, author notes. SA

Grisham focuses more on family interaction than lawyerly workings in this novel, and the result is a low-key story that may not hold everyone's attention. At the center is Ray Atlee, lawyer and son of a famous judge, who must solve a monetary mystery after his father's death. The mystery may sully the judge's fine reputation and it may also get Ray killed.

Beck's narration is only semi-voiced, which means that several of the Southern males populating the story sound similar to each other, but Grisham's writing usually makes it clear who is speaking to whom. End-of-side messages would be helpful in the CD format, as it is very easy for listeners to loop back To send the outgoing signals back to the receiving side for testing purposes. See loopback plug. to track one without realizing it. Otherwise the engineering quality is good and Beck's narration makes for pleasant listening.
