Sachs was born in Berlin, Germany. His family moved to England when he was eight years old to escape the Nazi persecution of Jews.

Following Pierre Brossard through this novel as he travels from one hiding place to another, the reader can sense that he is reaching the end of the line and is running out of options. Brossard is now in his 70s and is still trying to escape the death sentence bestowed on him after he had personally ordered the deaths of many Jews during WW II. After 40 years of hiding, his friends in the French government and the Catholic Church seem to have turned on him. He still maintains his twisted beliefs and he becomes as hunted and unwanted as the Jews he killed.

Sachs reads with tension and edginess, which augments the suspense SUSPENSE. When a rent, profit a prendre, and the like, are, in consequence of the unity of possession of the rent, &c., of the land out of which they issue, not in esse for a time, they are said to be in suspense, tunc dormiunt, but they may be revived or awakened.
