Nobody could squeeze the history of jazz into a single album, but Martin Williams' 1973 anthology (digitally remastered in 1997) covers a lot of territory. In a five-CD collection (with an accompanying 120-page booklet) of 95 tunes, Williams traces the shifting sound of jazz from Scott Joplin's rag-time and Jelly Roll Morton Noun 1.
