 uttered a word since September 1. Brett claims the stunt, inspired by a friend, is about sticking to commitments, while learning to listen well and observe details.

Although he's holding his tongue, Brett e-mails constantly and has a special two-way pager that lets him "talk" to friends and family. "I'm doing something that tests my every limit," Brett e-mailed us. "You can talk about the weather and sports till you're blue in the face, but until you make a difference in people, you're not saying anything worth saying." But he admits it does make asking for directions when you're lost a real headache headache
