Private Agent William Monk is out of his depth when investigating a theft and murder on the Thames in London in 1863. As a former policeman, he's more familiar with the streets and alleys of the city and nearly gets himself murdered on the docks. His wife Hester has her own death to contemplate when one of the women who is brought to her clinic for prostitutes comes down with bubonic plague bubonic plague: see plague.

 of suspense. The supporting characters are engaging and fully developed. Colacci narrates with assurance, creating many separate characterizations. This captures all the details of the period perfectly, from the social pressures on young women to the smells of the river and rotting bodies.
