The Sami People The Sami people (also Sámi, Saami, Lapps, sometimes also Laplanders) are the indigenous people of northern Europe inhabiting Sápmi, which today encompasses parts of northern Sweden, Norway, Finland and the Kola Peninsula of Russia.

An economically and culturally diverse people who speak several dialects of the Sami language, they have been divided by national borders for centuries. In recent decades the Sami have been transitioning from their principle image as herders of reindeers to such contemporary enterprises as writers, artists, and political activists.
