SAN FRANCISCO--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Dec. 15, 2003

The Storage Networking Industry Association An association of producers and consumers of storage networking products, whose goal is to further storage networking technology and applications. The Storage Networking Industry Association, or SNIA  (SNIA (Storage Networking Industry Association, San Francisco, CA, www.snia.org) An organization devoted to the advancement of mission critical storage systems. Founded in 1997, its goal is to determine the standards that must be developed to allow hosts and storage systems to interact via ) announced today the launch of two initiatives under the auspices of the newly formed Data Management Forum (DMF (Distribution Media Format) A floppy disk format from Microsoft that was used to distribute its software. DMF floppies compressed more data (1.7MB) onto the 3.5" diskette, and the files could not be copied with normal DOS and Windows commands. A DMF utility had to be used. ). The Data Protection Initiative (DPI (Dots Per Inch) The measurement of the resolution of display and printing systems. A typical CRT screen provides 96 dpi, which provides 9,216 dots per square inch (96x96). Flat panel displays from 110 to 200 dpi have also been developed. ) and Information Lifecycle Management Information Lifecycle Management refers to a wide-ranging set of strategies for administering storage systems on computing devices. Specifically, four categories of storage strategies may be considered under the auspices of ILM.  Initiative (ILMI ILMI Integrated Local Management Interface

Each initiative will operate as an online virtual community, sharing work efforts, training programs, research and other outreach services. Targeting IT professionals, these cooperative initiatives will define and build certification programs, education, training and a collaborative information portal with global influence and reach.

In support of these initiatives, the DMF recently held elections at the Fall 2003 Storage Networking World Storage Networking World (commonly called SNW) is a for data storage professionals in the United States. DATA PROTECTION INITIATIVE (DPI)

The DPI will design an architectural model for data protection, publish a glossary and implement guidelines for data protection, as well as refine and operate the enhanced backup IT portal. With an emphasis on technologies, the DPI will work with industry and government agencies worldwide to provide guidance on best practices in the protection of data from disasters, tampering, theft and vandalism.

"One of the first priorities of the DPI is to work with audit firms and audit committees of major companies to develop ways to measure the dollar-value of data and data loss so companies will have a meaningful way to judge the resources needed to protect that data," said Black. "End users will be the ultimate benefactors of the DPI's efforts to provide real-world best practices, knowledge and insight for the pooling of data protection resources."

Trimmer said, "With the emergence of new technologies in data protection, the Data Protection (DP) market can be a very chaotic space. The DPI will drive real value to the community of data management professionals by pursuing an active agenda to fundamentally improve market practices in managing, protecting and retaining the critical data within their organizations."

INFORMATION LIFECYCLE MANAGEMENT INITIATIVE (ILMI)

The ILMI is focused on defining and unifying the many approaches of information lifecycle management. The initiative's charter is to unify these disparate definitions as outlined by vendor-centric efforts and bring clarity and best practices to data center infrastructure operations.

Westover said, "The consumption of digitized data is greater now than ever before and it needs thoughtful disciplines, practices and visions outlined and managed for everyone's benefit. We have a unique opportunity to build a cooperative storage management model, and provide the education that will enable IT professionals and vendors to participate in and influence solutions and programs."

Van Hise added, "Emerging government regulations such as Sarbanes-Oxley, SEC 17a-4 and HIPAA (Health Insurance Portability & Accountability Act of 1996, Public Law 104-191) Also known as the "Kennedy-Kassebaum Act," this U.S. law protects employees' health insurance coverage when they change or lose their jobs (Title I) and provides standards for patient health,  (Health Information Portability and Accountability Act) are forcing companies to examine their policies around data retention. Through the ILMI, we can bring real business value by providing clarity from all the vendor-hype and work with the IT community to develop solutions that meet their needs and business requirements."
