"In the UK, several million people undergo surgery with general anesthesia Anesthesia, General Definition

Section of the Royal Society of Medicine. "We are pleased to have experts from around the world here today to discuss the latest in research and development for this vitally important area of patient care."

Mr. Chamoun's presentation examines "The Ongoing Development of Consciousness Monitoring Technology." He will discuss the steps involved with developing a new monitoring parameter in healthcare, the clinical impact of brain monitoring on patient safety and quality, and new opportunities for research investigating the potential impact of anesthesia care on long-term patient outcomes.

"This meeting reflects a growing scientific interest in better understanding the brain and consciousness, and recognizes that intraoperative awareness is an important global patient safety concern. Aspect is pleased to be co-sponsoring and participating in this event," said Mr. Chamoun. He continued, "I am privileged to join leading researchers and doctors from around the world who are concerned about this topic." More information about the meeting is available at http://www.rsm.ac.uk/academ/smtanaes.htm.

These events follow the publication of a joint statement on consciousness monitoring by the Royal College of Anaesthetists The Royal College of Anaesthetists is "the professional body responsible for the specialty of anaesthesia throughout the United Kingdom". It sets standards in anaesthesia, critical care, pain management, and for the training of anaesthetists, anaesthetic practitioners (non-doctor  and the Association of Anaesthetists of Great Britain and Ireland The Association of Anaesthetists of Great Britain and Ireland represents over 9,000 anaesthetists in the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland. . In the statement, the professional societies assert that brain function monitors should be considered in high risk cases, including patients with a previous experience of awareness, general anesthesia for caesarean section caesarean section: see cesarean section.  or cardiac surgery and trauma patients undergoing surgery. The Royal College of Anesthetists has published patient education material regarding awareness at http://www.rcoa.ac.uk/docs/awareness.pdf.

"We are pleased that these well respected organizations have joined groups such as the American Society of Anesthesiologists The American Society of Anesthesiologists (ASA) is an association of physicians (primarily anesthesiologists) whose stated goal is to raise and maintain the standards of the medical practice of anesthesiology and improve the care of the patient. , JCAHO JCAHO Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations, see there , and the American Association of Nurse Anesthetists in recognizing that intraoperative awareness is a patient safety concern and that brain function monitoring has a role as part of a comprehensive program to reduce the incidence of inadvertent surgical wake-ups," said Mr. Chamoun.

About BIS Monitoring

Using a sensor placed on the patient's forehead, BIS monitoring translates information from the electroencephalogram electroencephalogram /elec·tro·en·ceph·a·lo·gram/ (EEG) (-en-sef´ah-lo-gram?) a recording of the potentials on the skull generated by currents emanating spontaneously from nerve cells in the brain, with fluctuations in potential seen as  (EEG EEG: see electroencephalography. ) into a single number that represents each patient's level of consciousness. This number - the BIS value - ranges from 100 (indicating an awake patient) to zero (indicating the absence of brain activity). Using the BIS value to guide administration of anesthetic medication, in conjunction with other vital signs, allows clinicians to make better-informed decisions to achieve optimal anesthesia.
