The educational lecture is part of a day-long series of sessions at the Royal Society of Medicine, held in partnership with the Royal Institution of Great Britain.

These events follow the publication of a joint statement on consciousness monitoring by the Royal College of Anaesthetists and the Association of Anaesthetists of Great Britain and Ireland. In the statement, the professional societies assert that brain function monitors should be considered in high risk cases, including patients with a previous experience of awareness, general anesthesia for caesarean section or cardiac surgery and trauma patients undergoing surgery.
