A Martin Luther was the central personality of the religious/political revolution that rocked Europe during the 1500s, the 1600s, and beyond, and Collinson begins with Luther's well-known challenge to the power, beliefs, and practices of the Catholic Church. He goes on to examine a broad range of personalities, ideas, and effects and follows the complex process that ebbed and flowed throughout Europe and beyond. He looks at the movement called the Counter Reformation Counter Reformation, 16th-century reformation that arose largely in answer to the Protestant Reformation; sometimes called the Catholic Reformation.
