A psychological study about murder, revenge, love, and art, The Portrait is narrated by an artist named Henry MacAlpine, living on a remote French island, who lures his enemy, the influential art critic Noun 1. art critic - a critic of paintings

and former friend, William Nasmyth, to sit for a portrait. He intends the portrait to show Nasmyth as he really is, not as he presents himself to the world. Henry recalls Nasmyth's treatment of a fellow artist Henry loved, who hanged herself after a vicious review by the critic. Henry's monologue monologue, an extended speech by one person only. Strindberg's one-act play The Stronger, spoken entirely by one person, is an extreme example of monologue.  is a slow unwinding to an inevitable conclusion. Over several days, Henry finishes the portrait, gets Nasmyth drunk, and then suggests a walk along the wild coastal cliffs during a fierce storm. Both the reader and Nasmyth know what will happen next. Vance captures perfectly Henry's monologue, with the occasional characterization A rather long and fancy word for analyzing a system or process and measuring its "characteristics." For example, a Web characterization would yield the number of current sites on the Web, types of sites, annual growth, etc.  of other characters such as the snooty Nasmyth and the doomed Evelyn.
