. Situating childhood within a capitalist framework of power and exploitation, the articles ask whether we truly are "leaving no child behind." Furthermore, when we consider appropriate education and care for our young children, whose interests are really being served?

The authors present their cases against early childhood education's over-reliance on child development paradigms, cognitive psychology cognitive psychology, school of psychology that examines internal mental processes such as problem solving, memory, and language. It had its foundations in the Gestalt psychology of Max Wertheimer, Wolfgang Köhler, and Kurt Koffka, and in the work of Jean , and exclusively Western perceptions of the world. Part One examines child development paradigms in a postmodern society, Part Two investigates young children's daily realities, Part Three scrutinizes critical multiculturalism in the early childhood education curriculum, and Part Four considers early childhood education as seen from the ivory tower.

In the chapter "Take the Money and Run," MacNaughton and Hughes scrutinize the commodification Commodification (or commoditization) is the transformation of what is normally a non-commodity into a commodity, or, in other words, to assign value. As the word commodity has distinct meanings in business and in Marxist theory, commodification  of early education through the marketing of materials at professional conferences. Giroux's article asks the question, "Are Disney Movies Good for Your Kids?" Swadener discusses the need for a critical multicultural perspective that would replace deficit constructions of childhood by describing children and families "at promise," rather than "at risk." Rinehart examines the politics of language and culture in her description of young Native American children's real needs. Hatch asks the reader to consider postmodern thought from a vision of early childhood education that is liberating, anti-racist, feminist, critical, and revolutionary.

Readers will be compelled to honestly examine the tough issues at the heart of education; such issues will ignite passionate dialogue, forcing us to evaluate our role as teachers and fortifying our determination to stand up for developmentally appropriate education and care. The Politics of Early Childhood Education reminds us that we can no longer just talk the talk, but also must walk the walk as authentic advocates for children.
