The New York Times Launches ''Win a Trip with Nick'' Essay Competition; Winner Will Accompany Times Op-Ed Columnist, Nicholas Kristof, to Africa, And Have Opportunity to Submit a Web Log for Possible Publication on TimesSelect.

The New York Times announced today that it will conduct an essay competition for currently enrolled college and graduate students, 18 or older, on the subject of why they would like to join Pulitzer Prize Pulitzer Prize

Any of a series of annual prizes awarded by Columbia University for outstanding public service and achievement in American journalism, letters, and music. Fellowships are also awarded.
 winner Nicholas Kristof, New York Times Op-Ed and TimesSelect columnist, on a 10-day reporting trip to a country in Africa. Students competing for "Win a Trip With Nick" will need to articulate in their essays their reasons for wanting to go to Africa and explain what in their backgrounds makes them uniquely suited for such a venture; information about the competition is available at www.nytimes.com/winatrip. While the trip is likely to involve rough traveling conditions, it will also offer an unparalleled opportunity to see a part of the world little known to most Americans. Essays, which must be limited to 700 words, and application forms must be received by The Times by April 20. The winner of "Win a Trip With Nick," who will be selected by Mr. Kristof, will be announced by June 1 and preparations will then begin for the trip, which is planned to take place this summer.

The student who accompanies Mr. Kristof will have the opportunity to write a web log, which may be hosted on TimesSelect, The Times's premium online service featuring Times columnists as well as an array of other special offerings. In the blog, the student will be asked to convey his or her reactions to the trip for a Times audience. Additionally, video reports filed by the student will be shown on mtvU, MTV's 24-hour college network, as well as on mtvU Uber, the channel's broadband channel on mtvU.com.

"I began backpacking through Africa and Asia when I was in university and the experience changed my life," said Mr. Kristof. "I hope this trip will have a similar effect on the student who joins me and, indirectly, on other young people who read that student's blog. My goal is for readers to experience Africa, both its tragedies and its wonders, through the fresh eyes of a student."

The decision on which country in Africa to visit will be made later, depending on international developments. Possible journeys include traveling through Equitorial Guinea, Cameroon and Central African Republic Central African Republic, republic (2005 est. pop. 3,800,000), 240,534 sq mi (622,983 sq km), central Africa. The landlocked nation is bordered by Chad (N), Sudan (E), Congo (Kinshasa) and Congo (Brazzaville) (S), and Cameroon (W). , or else through Rwanda and Burundi. A Times multi-media producer, Naka Nathaniel, who often travels with Mr. Kristof to produce video specials, will also take part in the trip and help the student create presentations and file them by satellite phone.
