This 534-page encyclopedia has detailed entries that explain the significance of religious terms from the exoteric ex·o·ter·ic
adj.
Arising outside the organism; of external origin.
 (finding meaning in religious forms such as literal interpretation Noun 1. literal interpretation - an interpretation based on the exact wording
interpretation - an explanation that results from interpreting something; "the report included his interpretation of the forensic evidence"
) and esoteric (trying to understand the underlying meaning of the form, which cannot be mistaken with the form itself) perspectives. The entries thus assume an added dimension beyond the information that entries normally give. This feature gives more depth to the encyclopedia and makes for exciting reading.

The work also includes four appendixes: A, includes maps of the Islamic world, the Middle East, Arabia at the time of Muhammad's birth, and Islam in the modem world. B, shows maps of the Hajj hajj (häj), the pilgrimage to Mecca, Saudi Arabia, one of the five basic requirements (arkan or "pillars") of Islam. Its annual observance corresponds to the major holy day id al-adha,  route and the plan of the Grand Mosque The Grand Mosque is another name for Masjid al-Haram, in Mecca, the holiest mosque in Islam.
