The Nation's Weather

Showers and thunderstorms were to continue Thursday in an area spanning the northern and central Plains. Storms might spawn tornadoes in southern Kansas and central Oklahoma.

A low pressure system lingering off the East Coast was expected to continue to produce scattered showers and some thunderstorms from New England to the Southeast Coast.

In the West, a trough of low pressure was expected to bring cooler temperatures to the Northwest. A Southwest heatwave was expected to continue with temperatures in many portions of California rising into the 90s and 100s.

Temperatures in the Lower 48 states Wednesday ranged from a low of 28 degrees at Jackson, Wyo., to a high of 116 degrees at Death Valley, Calif.
