What happens to children when teachers and parents perceive them to be lazy? Do children want to be seen as lazy or unproductive? As we might expect from the title, Levine believes that laziness is a myth. Each child's brain is wired differently; therefore, he says, each child's productivity or "output" also will be different. Productivity wins approval, yet unproductive children disappoint themselves, their parents, and their teachers. Dr. Levine is a professor of pediatrics at the University of North Carolina North Carolina, state in the SE United States. It is bordered by the Atlantic Ocean (E), South Carolina and Georgia (S), Tennessee (W), and Virginia (N). Facts and Figures Area, 52,586 sq mi (136,198 sq km). Pop. Medical School, founder of All Kinds of Minds Institute, and director of the Center of Development and Learning. Drawing from his rich storehouse of experiences as a developmental-behavioral pediatrician, Levine probes the underlying reasons for output failure in children that teachers and parents often label as laziness. This book is made up of seven stories of children with whom he has worked. These stories describe the factors--memory lapses and difficulty with writing, for example--that lead to "output failure" (the term Levine prefers to "laziness"). The appendices contain assessments to determine output failure and tools for students to develop written reports and stories. The author introduces teacher-friendly terms to describe output failure problems. For example "active working memory," which exists between short-term and long-term memory long-term memory n. Abbr. "Small-chunk capacity" is the inability to hold increasingly more data simultaneously in active working memory. As we know, academic demands become more complex as children progress through school. When a child's memory is limited, learning becomes a struggle. I highly recommend this book, which is also available on audio cassette A 1/8" inch, analog audio tape format that has been widely used for music distribution and home recording. Although the same size housing is used, the tape thickness and length determine the recording time. Cassettes holding from 15 minutes to 60 minutes per side have been manufactured. . Levine's diagnosis and identification of children's output problems lead directly to education management strategies for school and home. This excellent book is a valuable resource for students in teacher preservice education courses and graduate-level teacher credential courses. Reviewed by Nancy J.
