The Muslim push in Africa has also surfaced in the east African nation of Malawi.

Malawi's Catholic bishops have protested the move, seeing it as another step in the Islamization of the country. They attribute this, and other moves such as proclaiming the Muslim feast of Bid a national holiday, to pressure from wealthy Muslim nations such as Saudi Arabia Saudi Arabia (sä`dē ərā`bēə, sou`–, sô–), officially Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, kingdom (2005 est. pop. , which give Malawi financial support.
