The game is based loosely on the concepts from SameGame. (ND has an Argusville but no Argus), but explores most of all the heart of the protagonist, Delphine Wotzka. The author has amazing human perception as she probes Delphine's deep friendships with women, sense of obligation to her souse of a father, relationship with a gay man who loves her, hard work in the Waldvogel butcher shop, and affection for the butcher's motherless sons. Threads of mystery weave throughout. There is a single, quite vivid description of homosexual sex and several other sexual scenes, but sex is not central to the book. An excellent choice for readers who like well-developed characters. Erdrich's reading voice is soft, carefully paced, and authentic to the characters whose thoughts she enters. Deserves its status as a National Book Award Finalist. Edna Boardman, Bismarck, ND |
