When Tara Mullray, a young Englishwoman, goes to visit her archeologist father in Egypt, she finds that he has just died. She discovers an artifact A distortion in an image or sound caused by a limitation or malfunction in the hardware or software. Artifacts may or may not be easily detectable. Under intense inspection, one might find artifacts all the time, but a few pixels out of balance or a few milliseconds of abnormal sound  among his effects and, when she realizes she is being followed, reconnects with an old lover who is also an archeologist. This is a complex thriller, it interweaves with Tara's story several predatory archeologists' search for a 50,000-man Persian army that was overcome by a desert sandstorm sandstorm, strong dry wind blowing over the desert that raises and carries along clouds of sand or dust often so dense as to obscure the sun and reduce visibility almost to zero; also known as a duststorm.  in 525 BC (a story told by Herodotus), three mysterious brutal murders, the personal angst of police detective Yusuf Khalifa, and hints of terrorist activity. Sussman, for whom this a first novel, knows this milieu well. He has skillfully skill·ful

 created an international group of characters who seek historic preservation Historic preservation is the act of maintaining and repairing existing historic materials and the retention of a property's form as it has evolved over time. When considering the United States Department of Interior's interpretation: "Preservation calls for the existing form,  while also searching for personal glory and riches and sometimes simple survival.

Griffin, who narrates with a British accent, voices a large cast of men, English, American and Arab. keeping them all distinct while maintaining suspense that ebbs and flows throughout. Should be popular with lovers of the genre. Caveat: some vivid rape fantasy and spots of extremely coarse, profane PROFANE. That which has not been consecrated.
