Business Journal held its thirteenth annual Women Making a Difference Awards Reception event at the Hollywood & Highland Entertainment Complex in Los Angeles on the evening of Tuesday, August 24th, 2004. Described by attendees as an uplifting and inspirational evening, the celebration honored Los Angeles based women who "lead by example," successfully blending effective business vision with a passionate commitment to positively "making a difference," both in the world of business and in the communities they serve. Nearly 100 prestigious nominees were submitted to the judges, who had the unenviable task of narrowing the field down to six honorees for this year's event. Judges this year included JoAnn Bourne Bourne, town (1990 pop. 16,064), Barnstable co., SE Mass., crossed by Cape Cod Canal; settled 1627, inc. 1884. She competed for the United States in the 1988 Summer Olympics held in Seoul, South Korea in the 4 x 400 metres where she won the Silver medal with of Avery Dennison. Los Angeles Business Journal publisher Matt Toledo kicked off the event by introducing the diverse crowd to keynote speaker Monica Lozano, Publisher and CEO (1) (Chief Executive Officer) The highest individual in command of an organization. Typically the president of the company, the CEO reports to the Chairman of the Board. of La Opinion, who shared some powerful insights. Specifically categorized Awards of Recognition were presented to a group of women who have truly blazed a path of leadership and inspiration for all Angelenos. The 2003 Women Who make a difference honorees included: Renee White Fraser, Ph.D., Owner/CEO, Fraser Communications (Business Owner/CEO of the Year Award); Carole Glodney, President, G&K Management Company, Inc. (Executive of the Year Award); Julie Fleshman, Executive Director, Pancreatic Cancer pancreatic cancer Malignant tumour of the pancreas. Risk factors include smoking, a diet high in fat, exposure to certain industrial products, and diseases such as diabetes and chronic pancreatitis. Pancreatic cancer is more common in men. Action Network (Rising Star of the Year Award); Sandy Gooch (Volunteer of the Year Award); and Peggy Cherng, President and CEO, Panda Restaurant Group, Inc. (Philanthropist of the Year Award).
