J Twelve-year-old Percy Jackson is startled to discover he is the son of Poseidon, his school chum Grover is a satyr satyr (sā`tər, săt`ər), in Greek mythology, part bestial, part human creature of the forests and mountains. Satyrs were usually represented as being very hairy and having the tails and ears of a horse and often the horns and legs of , his teacher Mrs. Dodds is one of the Furies, his Latin teacher is a centaur centaur (sĕn`tôr), in Greek mythology, creature, half man and half horse. Along the way the three friends meet and defeat Procrustes, Charon, Medusa, Echidna echidna, in zoology echidna (ĭkĭd`nə) or spiny anteater, primitive animal of the order Monotremata, the egg-laying mammals. (mother of monsters), and Ares, who is masquerading as a Santa Monica biker bad guy. Middle school students of mythology/magic/fantasy will enjoy the story, which is episodic but moves along briskly.
