In 1867 explorer and adventurer Henry Morton Stanley Sir Henry Morton Stanley, born John Rowlands (January 28, 1841 – May 10, 1904), was a journalist and explorer famous for his exploration of Africa and his search for David Livingstone.  went on a mission to rescue Emin Pasha Emin Pasha (āmēn` pä`shä), 1840–92, German explorer, whose original name was Eduard Schnitzer. A physician, he served (1876–78) under Gen. Charles Gordon in Sudan as a district medical officer. , last remaining lieutenant of General Gordon and presiding governor of Equatoria, the southern-most province of Egypt's Sudan. An Islamic jihad and tribal warfare had isolated him. Stanley's expedition was a risky venture at best; but even the most pessimistic could not have predicated the disasters which would take them a year to reach Emim Pasha. From the journey to the controversy it provoked in Europe 3 years later, The Last Expedition: Stanley's Mad Journey Through The Congo is riveting, impossible, and entirely true.
