In this fully realized historical novel, Taylor--the recipient of many awards, including the Newbery Medal--explores the powerful emotional conflicts created when the binding ties of family love and the dividing walls of caste clash. Paul-Edward's struggle for dignity and independence as a free man in a world that denies him equality, respect or justice is both deeply disturbing and uplifting.

Taylor's characters are well developed and various, and Santiago-Hudson's reading is superb. He reads with expression and accuracy in a variety of distinct voices and accents. Adept at the mean and harsh tones, his warm, homey accents linger after the tape is over. This prequel pre·quel
