The new JOC-ECRI Industrial Materials Price Index, replacing the index which has appeared in the paper since 1986, will be a joint venture between The Journal of Commerce and the New York-based Economic Cycle Research Institute, which specializes in leading indicators. The new index will be based on prices of 18 commodities. "The changes are necessary to reflect changes in the U.S. economy which have occurred since the index was last revised in 1994, as well as improved methodology for putting the index together," said Anirvan Banerji, co-director of research at the Economic Cycle Research Institute. "We are changing the ingredients and the recipe, as well as the name, but the new index will continue to reflect a continuity of philosophy."
