The Jewish people and Sacred Scripture. (Vatican).Vatican City--A new 200-page Vatican document entitled en·ti·tle tr.v. en·ti·tled, en·ti·tling, en·ti·tles 1. To give a name or title to. 2. To furnish with a right or claim to something: The Jewish People and their Sacred Scriptures in the Christian Bible was released by the Pontifical Biblical Commission The Pontifical Biblical Commission is a committee of Cardinals, aided by consultors, who meet in Rome to ensure the proper interpretation and defense of Sacred Scripture. This function was outlined in the encyclical Providentissimus Deus. in French and Italian early in December 2001. This document is meant to contribute to Jewish-Christian understanding by explaining the importance of the Jewish Scriptures for Christians and providing a context for Christians reading references to Jews in the New Testament. The document points out that the New Testament never claims that the Jews have been rejected by God, but that God's covenant with the Jewish people will be fulfilled. "This is a total novelty," Chief Rabbi "Chief Rabbinate" redirects here. See also Chief Rabbinate of Israel. Chief Rabbi is a title given in several countries to the recognised religious leader of that country's Jewish community, or to a rabbinic leader appointed by the local secular authorities. Joseph Levi of Florence told the Italian press. Rabbi rabbi [Heb.,=my master; my teacher], the title of a Jewish spiritual leader. The role of the rabbi has undergone a number of transformations. In the Talmudic period, rabbis were primarily teachers and interpreters of the Torah. Levi is especially pleased with the objective of the document: to manifest officially "the amazing a·maze v. a·mazed, a·maz·ing, a·maz·es v.tr. 1. To affect with great wonder; astonish. See Synonyms at surprise. 2. Obsolete To bewilder; perplex. v.intr. force of the spiritual ties that unite the the Church of Christ with the Jewish people." The newly published document is divided into chapters. The first one states that the New Testament recognizes the authority of the Old Testament as divine revelation Noun 1. divine revelation - communication of knowledge to man by a divine or supernatural agency revelation making known, informing - a speech act that conveys information , and cannot be understood without being intimately related to it and to the Jewish tradition that transmitted it. The second chapter examines more analytically how the writings of the New Testament accept the rich content of the Old Testament, referring to its fundamental topics in the light of Jesus Christ Jesus Christ: see Jesus. Jesus Christ 40 days after Resurrection, ascended into heaven. [N.T.: Acts 1:1–11] See : Ascension Jesus Christ kind to the poor, forgiving to the sinful. [N.T. . The third chapter records the extremely varied attitudes to the Jews reflected in the New Testament, something which also occurs in the Old Testament. Cardinal Ratzinger's introduction underlines the document's conclusions: the Scriptures are the most important thing Christians and Jews share; and any rebukes to Jews in the New Testament are no more frequent or harsher than the accusations against Israel in the Old Testament. The new publication "hopes to foster love toward the Jews in the Church of Christ," following the "abominable crimes" of which they were the object during World War II. The English version should be available shortly (B.C. Catholic, Dec, 17/ 01; Zen it, Jan. 17/02). |
