 Press Association awarded its top two prizes for editorial writing (among large papers) to two Peoria Journal Star The Peoria Journal Star is the major daily newspaper for Peoria, Illinois and its surrounding area. First owned locally, then employee-owned, it became a Copley-owned entity in 1996. In 2007, the paper was sold to Fairport, New York-based GateHouse Media.  staffers. Associate editor Mike Bailey won first place for a series of editorials exposing the lies and misrepresentations that hid a ten-million-dollar hole in a school district budget.  won second place for a series of editorials about the pension gorilla gorilla, an ape, Gorilla gorilla, native to the lowland and mountain forests of western and central equatorial Africa. It is the largest of the apes, the males reaching a height of 5 to 6 ft (150–190 cm) with a 9-ft (144–cm) arm spread.  that the Legislature has placed on taxpayers' backs, and cannot afford.
