Beginning in 1897 the Edinburgh publishing house of Chambers published a Biographical Dictionary Biographical dictionaries — a type of encyclopedic dictionary limited to biographical information — have been written in many languages. Many attempt to cover the major personalities of a country (with limitations, such as living persons only, in Who's Who  that was revised six times over the next century. Now it has been taken over by the present publisher, Americanized, and consequently updated and expanded. The volume contains over eighteen thousand brief biographical summaries, arranged alphabetically, and covering the world and all fields of endeavor since the beginning of recorded time. Each sketch has a one-line characterization of the person (as in Kid Ory: "US trombonist and bandleader"), the birth and death years, and a very concise description of the person's career, major publications if any, and suggestion of the person's importance (p. 1157). Though this will be a convenient desk reference, there are no bibliographical references and no index.
