Driehaus Foundation Preservation Award for Adaptive Reuse Adaptive reuse is the process of adapting old structures for new purposes.

The 75-year-old hotel, located on the Magnificent Mile The Magnificent Mile is the portion of Michigan Avenue in Chicago, Illinois extending from the Chicago River to Oak Street in Near North Side community area.[1]  of Chicago's prestigious North Michigan Avenue, underwent a $60 million renovation last year. Using historic photographs and blueprints, architects restored The Allerton's distinctive Italian Renaissance exterior to closely match the original facade. Renovations to the interior transformed the hotel into an exquisitely decorated, modern hotel. The Allerton Crowne Plaza is owned by FelCor Lodging Trust Incorporated and operated by Bass Hotels and Resorts.

To be eligible for the LPCI award the project must represent an outstanding example of preservation principles and add to the collection of significant works of preservation in Illinois. The award is conferred based on the impact of the project on the community, the quality and degree of difficulty of the restoration effort, and the degree to which the project serves as an example of excellence in historic preservation Historic preservation is the act of maintaining and repairing existing historic materials and the retention of a property's form as it has evolved over time. When considering the United States Department of Interior's interpretation: "Preservation calls for the existing form,  and influences future preservation efforts.

"The Allerton adaptive reuse project has revitalized not only a building but a neighborhood," noted from David Bahlman, Executive Director of LPCI. "A stroll up Michigan Avenue past Huron Street showcases the original beauty of the building, now that it has been so carefully rehabilitated by FelCor."

The renovation project team included Eckenhoff Saunders Architects and Pepper Construction, both of Chicago, and Designers II of Atlanta. Eckenhoff Saunders has designed renovation and restoration projects for a number of Chicago buildings, such as the 122 South Michigan Avenue Building (the last building designed by Daniel Burnham) and the Covenant Club at 10 North Dearborn. The project team was headed by W. Stephen Eckenhoff, principal of Eckenhoff Saunders and past president of The Chicago Chapter of the American Institute of Architects The American Institute of Architects (AIA) is a professional organization for architects in the United States. Organized in 1857, the Institute conducts various activities and programs to support the profession and enhance its public image, including periodically awarding the AIA .

Since the completion of The Allerton's renovation in September 1999, the hotel has received numerous awards, including the Commission on Chicago Landmark's Preservation Excellence Award, Chicago's Greater North Michigan Avenue Association Avenue Enhancement Award, Bass Hotels and Resorts' Newcomer of the Year Award, and two Year's Best Design Awards from Lodging Hospitality magazine.

The Landmarks Preservation Council of Illinois The Landmarks Preservation Council of Illinois is a not-for-profit organization founded in 1971 to prevent the demolition of the Dankmar Adler and Louis Sullivan designed Chicago Stock Exchange Building.  (LPCI) is the only not-for-profit membership organization that both advocates for and promotes the preservation of historic resources across the state through the education of Illinois citizens.
