New York City-based real estate developer Stephen M. Ross is founder, chairman and CEO of The Related Companies, L.P.
, Founder and Chief Executive Officer of The Related Companies, L.P., is this year's winner of the Harry B. Helmsley Distinguished New Yorker Award. This prize honors an industry leader for a lifetime of exceptional career accomplishments and unique service to the community.

The quality of life of numerous neighborhoods has been transformed by Mr. Ross' projects. Time Warner Center The Time Warner Center is a mixed-use skyscraper developed by The Related Companies in New York City. Its design, by David Childs and Mustafa Kemal Abadan of Skidmore, Owings & Merrill, consists of two 229 m (750 ft) towers bridged by a multi-story atrium containing upscale retail  has enhanced Columbus Circle, weaving together the Upper West Side, Midtown and Central Park South. Similarly, One Union Square South has been a catalyst for revitalizing this area of Midtown South. His tireless support for affordable housing development and New York's 2012 Olympic bid are testimony of his commitment to our city.

The Related Companies, founded by Mr. Ross in 1972, is a fully integrated real estate firm with divisions in development, acquisitions, financial services and property management. The real estate portfolio is valued in excess of $12 billion. Related currently ranks as the second largest owner of multi-family rental apartments in the country, with approximately 250,000 units in forty-four states.

Well-known throughout the country for its mixed-used developments, Related has several more such projects under development. CityPlace in West Palm Beach, Florida West Palm Beach, also known as West Palm, is the most populous city in Palm Beach County, Florida, USA. The city is also the oldest incorporated municipality in South Florida. According to the University of Florida's 2006 estimates, the city had a population of 107,617.  (which opened in 2000) won the Urban Land Institute Award for Excellence in the "Mixed-Use/Large-Scale" category. , Mr. Ross is widely regarded as one of the most prominent developers of both moderate income and luxury apartments. Recent residential projects include: The Chatham, The Park Imperial, The Sonoma, The Strathmore, Tribeca Parc, The Sagamore, One Union Square South, The Lyric and the Westport.

Related was also selected to develop the New York Coliseum The New York Coliseum was a convention center that stood on Columbus Circle in New York City from 1954 to 2000. It was designed by Leon and Lionel Levy in a modified international style, and included both a low building with exhibition space and a twenty-six-story office block.  site at Columbus Circle. The new $2 billion complex, Time Warner Center, opened in 2004. For the first time in a New York City development project, a mixed-use complex combines office, hotel, retail, residential and cultural uses at one location. He is a member of the Board of Directors of the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation The Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation (JDRF) is the leading charitable funder and advocate of type 1 (juvenile) diabetes research worldwide. The mission of JDRF is to find a cure for diabetes and its complications through the support of research.  as well as a trustee of the Jackie Robinson Foundation The Jackie Robinson Foundation is a non-profit organization which provides scholarships to minority youths for higher education, as well as preserving the legacy of Baseball Hall of Fame member, Jackie Robinson. .

The Harry B. Helmsley Distinguished New Yorker Award memorializes Mr. Helmsley, his generation's most admired real estate executive.
