The Hammer of God.


The reprint of Bishop Bo Giertz's novel The Hammer of God (Augsburg, $17.95), a work of fiction set in three different periods in the Swedish village Odesjo (1808, 1878-1880, 1937-1840), stresses the bad effects of deserting confessional Lutheran Confessional Lutheran is a name used by certain Lutheran Christians to designate themselves as those who accept the doctrines taught in the Book of Concord of 1580 (the Lutheran "confessional" documents) in their entirety, because they believe them to be completely  theology for legalistic le·gal·ism

. In each case the young pastor is helped by older pastors who stress what Henric Schartau Henric Schartau (27 September 1757 Malmö – 3 February 1825) was a Swedish Lutheran pietistic clergyman. His theology influenced a revivalist movement known as Schartauanism that is widespread in south and southwest Sweden. In the US it was influential in Western Maine.  and/or Carl Olof Rosenius offer in recovering evangelical theology. While the context of these stories will be strange and the narratives move slowly, this novel has had great influence in Sweden. It is worth a read, even though it is not great literature. EK
