In Exeter in the county of Devon in the year of our Lord 1195, someone has taken on the Lord's work by bumping Bumping can refer to:

The sheriff doesn't seem keen on finding the grim reaper, so the investigation is left to Sir John de Wolfe, Exeter's crowner (coroner coroner (kôr`ənər), judicial officer responsible for investigating deaths occurring through violence or under suspicious circumstances. The office has been traced to the late 12th cent. ) and his faithful henchman Gwynn. The murderer is almost certainly a mad priest. because he leaves bits of Bible verse at the scene of each crime. Besides the murders, John must also deal with his loveless marriage to the sheriff's sister Matilda. When the killer tries to burn down the house in which the sheriff is entertaining a harlot, John is secretly pleased but saves the man's reputation as well as his hide. Thomas is accused of the crimes and found guilty, so John must find the real killer in a matter of hours.

Matthews gives Knight's historical mystery a dramatic presentation. His full-voiced narration is excellent. I found the character of John de Wolfe a bit whiny after a while, but on the whole the novel is suspenseful sus·pense
