THE GREAT AMERICAN SMOKEOUT--NOVEMBER 15

The Great American Smokeout, now in its 14th year, takes place November 15. Held each year the Thursday before Thanksgiving by the American Cancer Society, the Smokeout is a kind of nonsectarian, 24-hour, nationwide Lent against tobacco products. Last year the event attracted close to 18 million of this nation's estimated 50 million smokers; nearly 4 million of them were still not smoking one to three days after the event. Such activities as obstacle courses, ashtray throws, cold turkey lunches, and quitters' raffles will be held in various gathering spots across the country.

This year, the ACS hopes to reach those groups currently being targeted the most aggressively by the tobacco companies--women and minorities--the two American groups taking up smoking in larger numbers these days than the general population. Meanwhile, the ACS offers these tips to help smokers kick their deadly habits:

* Hide all ashtrays, matches, etc.

* Stockpile sugarless gum, carrot sticks, etc.

* Drink lots of liquids, but pass up coffee and alcohol.

* Tell everyone you're quitting for the day.

* When the urge to smoke hits, take a deep breath, hold it for 10 seconds and release it slowly.

* Exercise to relieve the tension.

* Try the "buddy system" and ask a friend to quit too.

The ACS also encourages nonsmokers to "adopt" a smoking friend for the day of the Smokeout and help him or her quit.
