The Golden Compass.

[ILLUSTRATION OMITTED]

Young Lyra Belacqua lives in an alternate world much like our own except everyone is accompanied by a daemon, a physical representation of a person's soul in animal form. A whispered conversation about a strange substance known as "dust," disappearing children and a beautiful woman set Lyra on the path to adventure. Along the way, she will encounter shape-shifting creatures, witches and talking bears. Lyra has a golden compass (the Alethiometer) to help her find her way. Instead of seeking out true north, the compass seeks out Truth--but will Lyra learn how to use the compass in time?

The Golden Compass is based on Philip Pullman's bestselling His Dark Materials novels: The Golden Compass, The Subtle Knife and The Amber Spyglass.
