The Global Beacon Community of prayer. (Lay Movements XVI).


Many of the new lay movements in the Church are prayer communities. Because of the importance of these prayer communities we are introducing one here as an example, and would be pleased to introduce others, especially those in more than one province, whether or not they also have an active apostolate a·pos·to·late

The Global Beacon Community was founded in Toronto in 1978 by Professor John McRae, father of six children, as a Catholic movement based on the teachings of the Magisterium mag·is·te·ri·um

, and a special interest in Christ's wish that "they may all be one." The group meets each Thursday evening. It also, in 1989, started Mother of Mercy farm at Palmer Rapids, ON, near Bancroft and Barry's Bay, as a retreat centre; a meeting place for groups such as Marriage Encounter or Pro-Life; a camping experience for young people, families, and the disadvantaged. It has two chapels, classrooms, dormitories, a sports field, and a pond for fishing in the summer and skating skating: see ice skating; ice dancing; roller skating.
