In this unusual, imaginative mystery story Paul Tomm, a 23-year-old reporter on a small town Connecticut newspaper, is assigned to write an obituary for an eccentric eccentric, in mechanics, device for changing rotary to back-and-forth motion. A disk is mounted off center on a shaft. Brick achieves quite a task in pulling all these elements together as smoothly as possible. His semi-voiced narration (he individualizes the men but just softens his voice for the women) ranges over a variety of accents, including Brooklyn, English, Russian, and Middle Eastern. His flexible, lively delivery helps sustain the listener's interest in following the widespread, convoluted convoluted /con·vo·lut·ed/ (kon?vo-lldbomact´ed) rolled together or coiled.  plot and multiple characters.
