Foundation Film Fellowships at the Closing Night ceremonies of the 39th New York Film Festival at Avery Fisher Hall on Sunday, October 14, organizers announced today. This year marks the first time that the Grand Marnier Foundation Film Fellowships will be announced and presented by a filmmaker. The three fellowships, which each carry a cash award of $5000, were won by Sarah Bassine ('00) of Columbia University Columbia University, mainly in New York City; founded 1754 as King's College by grant of King George II; first college in New York City, fifth oldest in the United States; one of the eight Ivy League institutions. for her 19-minute short film EIGHT; Edgar Endress from the Syracuse University ('01) for his 13-minute video, THE MEMORY OF THE SNAILS; and Mariana Johnson of New York University New York University, mainly in New York City; coeducational; chartered 1831, opened 1832 as the Univ. of the City of New York, renamed 1896. It comprises 13 schools and colleges, maintaining 4 main centers (including the Medical Center) in the city, as well as the ('01) for her critical essay, "Celebration and Elegy elegy, in Greek and Roman poetry, a poem written in elegiac verse (i.e., couplets consisting of a hexameter line followed by a pentameter line). The form dates back to 7th cent. B.C. in Greece and poets such as Archilochus, Mimnermus, and Tytraeus. : Jean Vigo's ZERO DE CONDUITE." The three Grand Marnier Foundation Film Fellowships are awarded to graduate film students who demonstrate excellence and originality in the fields of filmmaking, film criticism, and video. The Grand Marnier Foundation Film Fellowships are offered to students nationally. The film and video winners, EIGHT and THE MEMORY OF THE SNAILS, respectively, will be shown at the Walter Reade Theater during an Independents Night screening in 2002. The winning essay, "Celebration and Elegy: Jean Vigo's ZERO DE CONDUITE" will be published in Film Comment's November/December 2001 issue. Presenter Wes Anderson had the world premiere of THE ROYAL TENENBAUMS at this year's New York Film Festival. He also directed BOTTLE ROCKET and RUSHMORE (NYFF NYFF New York Fast Ferry 1998). Grand Marnier, which has just signed on to continue its exclusive sponsorship of the New York Film Festival for another three years (through 2004), has sponsored the last six Festivals.
