This book is a biography of sorts, based on imagined events that occured in artist Pieter Bruegel's real life. The story is told in large two-page spreads with brief descriptive texts and informative scenes. The author creates regional landscapes as Bruegel winds his way south to Rome, drawing as he goes. There are sixteen small reproductions in the back of the book to help us see from what many of the illustrations are "borrowed." There is also a rich Author's Note which includes much of what is known of Bruegel's life and the situation in the sixteenth century he knew. Even the back cover has information on how engravings were made. This approach to art historical study is surefire for middle graders and up.
