After years of rule by the cruel Taliban regime, the people of. Kabul, Afghanistan's capital city, had reason to celebrate. On November 12, Northern Alliance forces, aided by the U.S., took Kabul after the Taliban had fled.

"All of the people are happy because they are free," said a 21-year-old Kabul resident. Under the Taliban, women could not speak in public, and men had to wear turbans and beards. Listening to Western music was forbidden.

Other key cities, including Mazar-i-Sharif, have also fallen into the hands of the Northern Alliance. But it will take time to establish a just government and a lasting peace. The U.S. hopes to assist the United Nations in seeing that an interim (temporary) government represents everyone in Afghanistan.

It will be a delicate balance. The Northern Alliance is mostly composed of ethnic Uzbeks and Tajiks, who are a minority in Afghanistan. The Taliban, on the other hand, mostly included people from Afghanistan 's dominant Pashtun tribe tribe [Lat., tribus: the tripartite division of Romans into Latins, Sabines, and Etruscans], a social group bound by common ancestry and ties of consanguinity and affinity; a common language and territory; and characterized by a political and economic .

The U.S. will soon begin operating Radio. Free Afghanistan to bring news to people (see cartoon cartoon [Ital., cartone=paper], either of two types of drawings: in the fine arts, a preliminary sketch for a more complete work; in journalism, a humorous or satirical drawing. ). The Taliban had allowed the broadcast of only news giving their point of view.
