Not surprisingly, since Martel is the author of the quirky Life of Pi, each of these four short stories has an unusual theme. The title work deals with two close friends, one of whom is dying of AIDS contracted from a blood transfusion blood transfusion, transfer of blood from one person to another, or from one animal to another of the same species. Transfusions are performed to replace a substantial loss of blood and as supportive treatment in certain diseases and blood disorders. . The suffering of the patient and the appalled reaction of his friend are heartbreaking heart·break·ing

The third story, spoken in the voice of an older man, Jones, is a series of letters written by the warden of a penal institution Noun 1. penal institution - an institution where persons are confined for punishment and to protect the public

 to the mother of an executed convict, describing his final hours of life. The fourth concerns an old lady and her grandson. Caruso, as the grandmother, natters Natters is a muncipality in the Austrian state of Tyrol in the district of Innsbruck-Land.

 on about her beloved husband and his early loss, irritating the young man until he finds an ancient mirror-making machine in her attic, powered by memories. Ledoux tells the story competently. Pat Dole, Richmond, VA
