) today announced that NetWorld+Interop, in collaboration with industry-leading consulting group Ashton, Metzler & Associates, have released findings from a WAN survey of IT professionals who attended NetWorld+Interop.

The study, titled "The Rapidly Changing Enterprise WAN Marketplace" found that driven by the desire to cut cost, there is more pressure now to make fundamental changes to the enterprise WAN than has been since the beginning of the movement to frame relay A high-speed packet switching protocol used in wide area networks (WANs). Providing a granular service of up to DS3 speed (45 Mbps), it has become popular for LAN to LAN connections across remote distances, and services are offered by most major carriers.  a decade ago. Survey respondents also indicated that they have little interest in making any significant additional deployment of legacy WAN technologies, such as Frame Relay and ATM, but have significant interest in deploying emerging WAN technologies such as Convergence, Quality of Service, Voice over IP (VoIP) and IP Based VPNs.

"The three key components of this research are a clear definition of what technologies enterprise users are planning to deploy in the next year, the factors that are driving them to adopt these technologies, as well as the factors that are inhibiting deployment," said Jim Metzler, vice president of Ashton, Metzler & Associates.

The survey found that although business demands and desires highlight a fundamental need for altering the WAN landscape, the challenges in budgets, lack of personnel and complexity of deploying technologies, such as QoS, bring about a challenge in changing the dynamics of tomorrow's enterprise WAN. The study concludes that breaking through these impediments IMPEDIMENTS, contracts. Legal objections to the making of a contract. , and hence enabling the enterprise WAN to undergo a fundamental transformation, will require a concerted effort on the part of the enterprise networking The networking infrastructure in a large enterprise with multiple computer systems and networks of different types is extraordinarily complex. Due to the myriad of interfaces that are required, much of what goes on has little to do with the real data processing of the payroll and orders.  function, hardware vendors, and service providers.

"Our research affirms what NetWorld+Interop has been saying about the WAN enterprise and its impact on the networking professional," said Leonard Heymann, vice president of content, NetWorld+Interop. "The study both crystallizes the opportunity and the obstacles facing the networking organization relative to the evolution of its WAN infrastructure, and identifies steps that all components of the NetWorld+Interop community must take if they are truly interested in enabling the enterprise WAN to undergo an essential transformation."

Approximately 500 network professionals completed the survey in June and July of 2001. These professionals consisted of registered attendees of NetWorld+Interop in either Atlanta in 2000 or Las Vegas Las Vegas (läs vā`gəs), city (1990 pop. 258,295), seat of Clark co., S Nev.; inc. 1911. The respondents to the survey were further qualified to ensure that they played a significant role in the evolution of their company's WAN backbone.
